Bespoke Joinery — what's actually involved

What it is

Bespoke joinery is custom timber work designed and built to your specific dimensions, finish and use — staircases, fitted wardrobes, alcove storage, media units, wall panelling, library walls, window seats, kitchen islands, reception desks. Made in our workshop from solid timber and high-grade veneered boards, finished to furniture standard and installed on site.

Who it's for

Homeowners who want storage that actually uses their awkward Victorian alcoves, landlords who want a property to stand out at re-let, commercial clients fitting out an office or salon, and anyone whose taste has outgrown flat-pack. Bespoke is the answer when off-the-shelf either won't fit or won't last.

When you need it

When you're renovating and want the joinery to look intentional, not bolted on. When you've measured an alcove and discovered no off-the-shelf unit comes close. When you're selling and need a hero feature that lifts the asking price. When you've inherited a beautiful old staircase that needs restoring properly.

Why professional matters

Off-the-shelf furniture is built to a price using thin MDF, dowel joints and lacquered foil. It looks reasonable for two years and starts failing in five. Properly made joinery uses solid timber where it matters, mortise-and-tenon or biscuit-jointed carcasses, real veneers and a finish that can be touched up rather than thrown away. Done once, kept for decades.

What happens if it's ignored

The cost of leaving it — or getting it wrong

Off-the-shelf 'fits' that leave 50mm gaps

Standard cabinets don't fit alcoves. The result is filler strips, awkward gaps and a finished room that looks compromised. Bespoke uses every millimetre of the space.

Cheap timber that warps and sags

MDF wardrobe rails sag under hanging weight. Veneer-on-chipboard staircases creak and split. We use timbers and boards rated for the job — and we know the difference.

Designs that don't survive the second look

Trend-led joinery looks tired in three years. Considered detailing (proportions, mouldings, hardware) ages well and protects resale value.

Site fitters butchering workshop work

Good joinery can be ruined by a sloppy install — scribed edges cut short, panels forced into out-of-square openings. We design, build and install with the same team.

Our Process

A defined system — so you know exactly what happens next

  1. Step 1

    Design consultation

We visit, measure, listen to what the piece needs to do, and sketch options. Materials, finish, hardware and budget agreed before any wood is cut.

  2. Step 2

    Detailed drawings & timber selection

CAD drawings sent for approval. Timber selected from trusted UK and European suppliers — sustainable hardwoods, marine ply, FSC-certified boards.

  3. Step 3

    Workshop fabrication

Machined and assembled in our workshop using mortise-and-tenon, dovetail or biscuit jointing as the piece demands. Dry-fitted, sanded, finished before delivery.

  4. Step 4

    Site installation

Delivered to site, scribed into the room and fixed back to studwork. Mouldings mitred on site so joints close perfectly against existing wall lines.

  5. Step 5

    Finish, snag & care notes

Final coat applied, snagged with you, and we leave written care notes for the finish. Touch-up paint or oil supplied where appropriate.

In Detail

Materials, methods and the situations they suit

Bespoke joinery covers a wide range of work. Below are the most-requested categories from our Liverpool workshop, with the construction detail that separates a £400 cabinet from a £4,000 piece of furniture.

Staircases — new build, replacement and restoration

We build cut-string and closed-string staircases in oak, ash, beech and softwood for paint. Treads housed and wedged into stringers (not nailed), risers glued and pinned, balustrades morticed into newel posts. For period restorations we splice new sections into existing stringers and match historic mouldings on a spindle moulder. Building Regs Part K (going, rise, headroom, handrail) all met as standard.

Fitted wardrobes and alcove storage

Carcasses in 18mm furniture-grade birch ply or veneered MDF, scribed to ceiling and walls, with adjustable shelves, soft-close drawers (Blum or Hettich runners) and full-height hanging where required. Doors made flush or shaker style, painted in our workshop in Farrow & Ball or trade equivalents. Internal layouts designed around your actual wardrobe contents — not a generic spec.

Panelling, wainscoting and feature walls

Shaker panelling, Georgian fielded panels, vertical T&G, slatted oak feature walls. We set out the panel widths so they centre on door openings and fireplaces — generic kits never do. Painted finishes hand-applied and sanded between coats for a furniture-grade finish.

Kitchen islands, media units and reception desks

Free-standing pieces built to integrate with existing kitchens or new schemes — solid hardwood or laminated worktops, integrated sockets, cable management, finished backs (so the piece looks intentional, not bolted on). Reception desks for salons and offices built with embedded lighting and brand-matched veneers.

Window seats, library walls and home offices

Window seats with lift-up lids and concealed soft-close stays. Library walls built around existing chimney breasts with adjustable shelves, integrated lighting and concealed cable runs. Home offices with built-in desks, integrated monitor risers and acoustic panelling.
